Traffic on the corner of Orchard Lake Road and Walled Lake Road (1927). Winfred Hamlin writes in his autobiography, In the spring I worked for an old fellow, who was a boss for the Country Road Commission. He was a hard boiled old gold miner. He was the kind that dug for gold by hand. We were working on the Walled Lake Road. They were making a state road out of it.

Pine Lake school – The attached photo of Pine Lake is my only photo, maybe they didn’t take any more school pictures. It was 1939-40, my first year there, I can date that because that is when we moved to Middlebelt from the W. Maple Rd.farm of my grandfather. Also Tom Roberts is in the picture, and he only attended one year. We got to ride to school in Dad’s 37 plymouth, or Tom’s Mom’s ragtop Cadillac, which had a RADIO. And she smelled of expensive perfume, something farm kids weren’t accustomed to. I hope the attachment opens, we aren’t too good at this. The kids, left to right, rear row first James Taylor, Joe Allen _________, Gordon Schultze, Betty Bentley, Margaret Allen, Vic Bentley, Shirley Schultze, Phyllis Bentley, Marie Frolund (blonde, just in front of G. Schultze, Sally Quinn, Dick Miller, Charlotte Bentley, Nancy Dixon (with cross) Leona Mason, Herb Dixon, Mrs. Mayer The two boys after Nancy, just to the right of the Bentley boys…???. perhaps Robert Morris and _____ we had a few kids who stayed with us only a year or so Frank Allen, Tom Roberts, Harry Quinn, Lawrence Bentley, Jimmy Bentley. The ________may be one of the boys from he Protestant Children’s home on Lone Pine, one of them was Norman Krushka, they were kids from Detroit…rode to school with me in Dad’s car, but were older, and I have forgotten the names most of them. One of the kids from that home drowned in Egg Lake, on our farm, before we moved there, Egg Lake is renamed now, it was on the S. side of Lone Pine Rd. On the north side was a ridge where Dad told me the Detroit Urban RR once ran a line. from Orchard Lake to Middlebelt. The Bentley kids were great. Vic saw to it that everybody behaved, didn’t let any bad stuff happen on the playground. We had a girl scout troop and I remember Phyllis saying to Nancy and I that SHE didn’t have time to work for all those merit badges, there were l3 kids in the family…they lived in a big houss across Long Lake Rd. from the school. Dorlyn Wilkins was younger, I remember when she came to school for the first time, and I do remember when Dorwin was born, because she told us about it.

However, competition increased. There was the regular Orchard Lake One Hundred Dollar Cup, and later the Ward Pelouse One Thousand Dollar Cup. Either could be won for keeps by winning first for five consecutive years. The Keewaydin came very near winning it, only to have lost in the fourth year. From Campbell Harvery Manuscript

The first year or so, the races were between the ordinary pleasure craft-Forrest Campbell in the Islander, Will Ward’s Tantalizer, A. D. Noble’s Ellen Marie, the Beath boys’ Irene G., and Loos’ Urania. Most, if not all, were built by Chas. Plass, Oak Grove. Pennants were awarded for the first three. A launch served as a judges’ boat. Uncle Forrest allowed me to take out his 25-foot racing boat, the Keewaydin. She was a joy and a job to sail. Holding the mainsheet alone in any considerable breeze kept one busy. There was a correspondingly heavy centerboard to manage, and with the staysail also, one was kept very busy. But it was more than rewarding. She was a responsive, fast boat. Perhaps a wind would come up. That meant an evening sail, especially on a lovely, moonlit night. So we’d get up a congenial crowd and off we’d go in the roomy, comfortable Islander. Those were unforgettable times. The wind at night is generally steadier than in the day. All was quiet except for the noise of the water on the bow or the rigging or coming about. Occasionally we sang. In a couple of hours we were very sleepy, and so we landed half asleep. From Campbell Harvery Manuscript

Strong’s Pavillion – James [Strong] and Frances moved to Keego Harbor and started a boat livery on Dollar Lake. When James died (he is buried at Pine Lake Cemetary) Frances sold the boat livery to Lloyd [son]. The boat livery business was expanded with the construction of Stong’s Pavilion which became a popular summer dancing pavilion up until the legalizing of beer. With beer gardens of the time providing free dancing for their patrons the popularity of the summer pavilions faded. Treacy Memoirs
