Volunteer Opportunities

See below for some of the many ways to join our team as a volunteer. Please indicate which volunteer position you are interested in when you fill out the Volunteer Application Form or when you email snelsen@gwbhs.org.

“Our School History” Project – Data Entry

Help us enter data for photographs related to local school history! You will learn how to upload pictures and enter data into our digital collections database. If you are interested in volunteering, please email snelsen@gwbhs.org or call (248) 757-2451.

  • Orientation: Thursday, February 23, 6-7PM
  • Time Commitment: minimum of 5 hours monthly from March 2023 to September 2023

Docent Positions

  • Apple Island Group Tour Docent leads a 45 minute island tour. Tours are intended for 2nd grade classes or private groups. Training and stipend provided.
    1. When: June 10 & 11, 2023
    2. How often: Annually 
  • Orchard Lake Museum Group Tour Docent leads a 30 minute museum tour. Tours are intended for 2nd grade classes or private groups. Training and stipend provided.
    1. When: June 10 & 11, 2023
    2. How often: Annually 

Host Positions

  • Library Presentation Hospitality & Information Host provides GWBHS literature to guests and encourage them to sign up for our newsletter, attend other events, or become a member.
    1. When: 30 minutes prior to library event  (held monthly in winter, spring, and fall)
    2. How often: As many times as you would like to volunteer!
  • Library Presentation Sign-In Host greets guests as they arrive to a library presentation. Ask guests to sign in and keep an accurate attendance count.
    1. When: 30 minutes prior to library event (held monthly in winter, spring, and fall)
    2. How often: As many times as you would like to volunteer!
  • Museum Open House Host greets and count guests as they arrive to the museum. They encourage guests to look at the literature display, sign up for the GWBHS eblasts, and become a member of the organization. This volunteer can also volunteer for museum maintenance before the open house. Training provided.
    1. When: second Sunday monthly open houses from 1-4 pm 
    2. How often: At least four times annually to help smooth operations
  • Orchard Lake Nature Sanctuary Walk Host greets and count guests as they arrive to the event. They will encourage them to look at the literature display, sign up for the GWBHS eblasts, and become a member of the organization. 
    1. When: Sunday, 1:30-3:15 pm
    2. How often: Event is held twice per year (spring, fall) – volunteers can sign up for either date or both

Museum Positions

  • Collections Maintenance Volunteer assists the Collections Maintenance Coordinator to pull/return archives to storage, file materials, and maintain collections, using museum storage best practices. Work during agreed upon hours, possibly second Sunday monthly open houses from 1-4 pm after training period; flexible hours after that. Must demonstrate organizational skills needed to alphabetize and file. Training provided.
    1. When: Training is during second Sundays of the month open houses from 1-4 pm and can be adjusted as needed.
    2. How often: At least four times annually to help smooth operations
  • Exhibit Planning & Design Assistant works with our exhibit design transporting exhibit materials to and from storage as well as staging these materials in the museum galleries. This volunteer should have a creative instinct as well as the ability to travel up and down stairs and lift/carry artifact boxes.
    1. When: Work during agreed upon hours, possibly monthly open houses from 1-4 pm
    2. How often: As often as needed
  • File Maintenance Volunteer assists the Collections Maintenance Coordinator to pull/return materials to files in the Museum basement.
    1. When: Training is during second Sundays of the month open houses from 1-4 pm and can be adjusted as needed.
    2. How often: At least four times annually to help smooth operations 
  • Museum Maintenance Volunteer cleans the museum galleries and office including vacuuming the carpet, dusting/wiping down the exhibit cases, and cleaning the bathroom. This person can also volunteer as the open house host. 
    1. When: 11:30am – 12:30 pm prior to the Museum monthly second Sunday open house
    2. How often: At least three times annually to help smooth operations

Apple Island Tours: If you are interested in helping out during Apple Island Tours (occurs annually in June) in any capacity, contact volunteer@gwbhs.org.

High School students in need of volunteer hours: volunteering with GWBHS can be used for National Honor Society or Community Service hours. If you need volunteer hours, please indicate that on your Volunteer Application Form.
